Contemporary Indigenous Studies is open to all Grade 11 and 12 students. You do not have to take Social Studies 11 Explorations prior to taking this course, but that is an option. In Contemporary Indigenous Studies 12, we will work together to create a brave space from which to understand and break down barriers persisting for indigenous peoples and communities nationally and globally. We will explore ancestral identity, learn indigenous worldviews and develop a collective understanding of reconciliation. Studies in class will address geographical issues such as biodiversity and natural resource control, power imbalance, colonization, and the principles of a just relationship between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples or settlers. Also get familiar with acronyms like UNDRIP, UNPFII, MMIWG, TRC, SDGs and more. We will learn about what it means to have indigenous roots or to be an ally - immerse yourself in a perspective that sees the gift of life embodied in the land, the water, the air, and the energy of the sun that drives the earth’s interconnected systems and tells its stories.
